Do you know a friend or family member who lost out on a job opportunity of a lifetime? Perhaps you thought that you aced an interview and never heard from the company again? Allow me to educate you on some very common mistakes people make when interviewing. These five tips are often over looked but can make the difference in your ability to acquire that long sought after career you’ve had your eye on. You wouldn’t want to take a test without studying right? Get ready to take notes…

1) Make sure you are always punctual. Your first impression is the absolute most important. Since that statement is overused many think it isn’t important anymore, however, that couldn’t be any farther from the truth. You may also hear the phrase, “if you’re on time, you’re actually late”. While that isn’t entirely accurate, being early shows many things to an employee:
– You’re interested and dedicated.
– You’re serious about the opportunity.
– You’re prepared for the meeting.

2) Always tell the truth in an interview. Whether you think something is pertinent or not, it is. If you are asked to explain why you are no longer with an organization, do not lie or stretch the facts. The truth will always be revealed and it is easily attainable through a reference call. An employer would much rather hear it from you why you were terminated as opposed to you hiding the information and they discover it from a previous employer. We all make mistakes and a prospective employer respects those who admit their mistakes up front.

3) Never bad mouth ex-employers. This may come back to haunt you after an interview. You may be asked numerous times what you did not like about the company. It is okay to be honest, but make sure you do not bash the organization, employees, and especially supervisors/managers. Prospective employers are already envisioning you bad mouthing them if you’re angrily spewing negative comments on your last boss/company. Don’t do it. There is always a more constructive way to voice your opinion regarding a situation you didn’t agree with. Always take the high road no matter who was at fault.

4) Be prepared to explain what makes you different than other applicants. Odds are if you are interviewing for a position, you are not the only candidate doing so. Spend a few minutes prior to the interview identifying your strong attributes. Understand what makes you successful and what makes you stand out in the crowd. Know that you WILL be competing against others for the position. It’s okay to be confident, just don’t be cocky. Employers will want you to walk the walk, which is something they will see over time. Constantly bragging about what you’re capable of isn’t going to impress an employer who hasn’t see you in action yet. Be humble and confident, but make sure your answers are meaningful and relevant.

5) Be short and sweet. Most employers will have numerous interviews and screenings that they must complete. Answer all questions with more than just a simple “yes” or “no,” but do not recite your entire life story. Too much side conversation and run on facts deteriorate from the important topic at hand – your ability to do the job and what you can offer the organization. Time is always a concern for everyone. If an employer can see that you value their time and your own, they’re more likely to consider you for a position.

In closing, there are many things to help you in your interview preparation. These five tips are just a basic guide but a great start. Ensure that you’re on time, tell only the truth about your experience and skills, never talk negatively about previous employers, be prepared to explain why you’re different, and be short and sweet. If followed, these tips will definitely give you a competitive advantage over other interviewees. Happy hunting!
