How to Use Feedback to Succeed at Work

Generally we talk about feedback between a manager/supervisor and an employee. However, feedback can, and should, be given at all levels.

Feedback: the process in which the effect or output of an action is returned.

You can avoid feedback mistakes by learning how to communicate more effectively using the SBI Technique. This technique is simple, direct, effective, and replaces personal attacks and incorrect judgements.

Step 1 : Situation – Capture and clarify the specific situation in which the behavior occurred.

  • “This morning during our morning huddle”
  • “When we were walking to our afternoon meeting “

The more details you can capture the better clarity the person will have to understand the situation. Do not beat around the bush. Be straightforward and get to the point.

Step 2: Behavior The way one acts.

  • Focus on behavior vs. judging of the behavior
  • Use verbs vs. adjectives
  • Behavior is the most crucial step but is commonly omitted

By focusing on the action and not the impression you can communicate clear facts that managers, subordinates, and peers can understand and improve on.

Step 3: Impact – How the behavior affected me.

  • By sharing your views on the behavior, you can build trust
  • Opens doors for better communication

By utilizing’s the SBI Techniques, you can become a better communicator and a more effective team player. Whatever level you hold in an organization, from managers to team leaders, the presentation of your feedback needs to be effectively relayed in order to be effectively useful.
