First of all, what is a resume? It is a brief written summary of a job applicant’s past employment history, education, accomplishments, and other important information. It’s the first contact a potential employer has with you. Make it count! Here are a few reasons why resumes are so important.
It Says a Lot About you
A resume tells where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’re headed. This is where you list your employment history, skills you’ve acquired through the jobs you’ve had, education, and your accomplishments. This is your chance to show the employer what you’re all about. Sell yourself! Try to cater it toward the type of job you’re applying for. Most resumes should only be about one page long, so being concise is important.
It’s Your First Impression
Typically, hiring managers or recruiters don’t spend more than 15 seconds looking at a resume because they have so many they receive daily. This is the first impression the hiring manager gets of you. The way you write it and how it’s presented shows how much time you spent on it and your ability to pay attention to detail.
A resume also allows you to communicate more information that you may not get a chance to include on the application. Make sure yours is an accurate appraisal of who you are as a candidate and why you’d be a good fit for the position you’re applying for.
It Can Make or Break Your Interview
The purpose of providing your resume is to get the interview. Spend some time on it so you’re prepared and if you have someone who can help you with it, then do so! Never give false information, but emphasize on the good and de-emphasize the bad. Make sure the information you’re providing creates a positive and lasting impression on the employer.
Remember, the resume is a huge part of getting a job, but the rest is on how you interview.
