August is right around the corner, which for most means some changes to your day-to-day life. For instance, your kids may be going back to school or adjusting to school at home. You might be heading back into the office or adjusting to a longer work from home policy. Whatever your fall schedule brings, many of us are dealing with this consistent overwhelming feeling between our work-life balance. Here are some tips to help you navigate these times.

Prioritize Your Priorities

It is best to cut the fluff. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with your work tasks, handle what is most pressing first. Once you get that out of the way, you will feel a sense of relief and be able to knock out the smaller stuff after. Sometimes when we have a lot on our plates, we think handling the easy tasks first is the best idea, but then you just delay your harder tasks even longer. Take on what is most important first and ease your way through the rest.

Act Rather Than React

When you are starting to feel overwhelmed, your body is in fight or flight mode. You will instantly want to react when a situation arises, but instead focus on what you can control.

Reset the Panic Button

For some, hitting the panic button when they are overwhelmed is an instinct. Ask yourself, “How is this really?” Take a step back and see the situation from someone else’s view. Still as scary? For me, working from home has made me feel like I need everything done this instant. Living in a digital world, we are used to instant gratification; and now working remotely, I have started to carry that feeling into my work. It took me a while to realize what I was doing and that normal business standards still apply.

Schedule Your Day

Put a plan together first thing in the morning. I’m a list gal, so each morning I write my to-do list that I must accomplish by the end of the day – no matter what happens. It helps keep me on track. Others need to schedule their day out in timeslots to keep everything in order. Having some sort of schedule helps you feel in control of your day.

Break Up Your Day

Take your lunch, an afternoon break, go for a walk around the block, do a few minutes of breathing, whatever it is you need daily to reset your mind. No one can work nonstop all day every day. Don’t skip those breaks; they are there for a reason.

In this crazy, unpredictable world, make sure you are taking the time to care for yourself. How you feel directly affects how well you perform in your professions and daily lives. Pick one of the few above and see what positive changes you see in return!
